The Suhr Custom standard guitar is one of the best Suhr has produced (there’s a reason it’s their standard—it sets the bar as far as they determine quality).  However, there are many players out there who want to really get more of a jazzy vibe, and the Suhr Standard isn't quite the best for the job.  To handle that need, Suhr has created the Suhr Custom Archtop.  It provides the great playability of the Classic while creating a much more mellow jazz sound.  Of course, like the Classic, it also retains Suhr’s great looks, and it’s an instrument that is sleek and elegant.

The Archtop generally comes with a mahogany back and a figured maple top, although you can work with Suhr if you’d like other woods.  The neck is generally made from mahogany as well, but again, different wood combinations are available if you prefer.  There are many different hardware options too, making the Custom Archtop one of the most customizable guitars Suhr offers.

The Custom Archtop is definitely a specialty guitar.  If you’re a jazz player, you’re going to love its resonant tone and mellow sounds.  For other types of music, you may be better off going with the Standard, but you might still want to test drive a Custom Archtop just to see what sounds you can get out of it.

The Suhr Guitars Pro series contains a number of different models, and while each of these is somewhat related, each also has its own unique features.  The S3 and S4 models are a pair of Suhr’s that are nearly identical, but again, each has something of its own to offer, and the two sound slightly different.  If you’ve heard a S1 or S5, don’t think you’ve heard one of these two guitars.  They’re not quite the same.

The Suhr S3 and S4 use American basswood for the body and tops it with flame maple.  They also use an SSH+ pickup configuration in the bridge position.  They both use an even C slim shape for the neck, but the S4 features a one-piece maple neck.  The fingerboard on the S3 is made from Indian Rosewood.  This is a bit different from the other Pro series guitars, which use different woods from the neck and fingerboard. The versatility and incredible sounds of the Suhr Guitars Guthrie Govan instrument make it a prime choice for many players, especially those that need a guitar with a fast response time.  The guitar was designed to Govan’s exacting specifics, and it includes many things he loves in a guitar but could never find on just one instrument.  It starts out with a mahogany body and neck, like many of the guitars Govan favors.  The top is made from flame maple, and the fingerboard is Pau Ferro.  This gives the guitar some tightness and a bit of punch, and when combined with the mahogany, the overall tone is quite warm and articulate.

The guitar uses an ML single-coil pickup in the middle position, an SSV humbucker on the neck, and an SSH+ humbucker on the bridge.  This HSH configuration is very versatile.  The 5 way switch lets you select which pickups are on.  There’s also a push-button blower switch that lets you really rock the bridge humbucker from any setting, so you can quickly go for that great sound.  Then there’s the Tremol-No trem-locking device, which is great if you need different tunings during a performance.
The overall price of the Guthrie Govan is $3500.

The Suhr Custom Standard guitar is a great instrument, especially for those who like to put a little bit of their personality into their guitar.  The Suhr Custom allows players to, as the name suggests, customize the guitar via a number of different choices.  While it’s not exactly the same as building a guitar from scratch or having someone custom build a guitar to your exact specifications, getting to choose from different woods and other options does give you a lot of control over how your instrument looks and sounds.  A Suhr Custom Standard is also less costly than having a guitar built, but you have almost free range in selecting woods and hardware.

So what choices do you have with the Suhr Custom Standard?  Well, you can go for either a simple, basic guitar or a tricked out axe.  For the body, you have choices such as basswood/maple top, an alder body, a swamp ash/maple top body, or a mahogany/maple top body.  Popular neck woods include maple and mahogany, and you can go for a standard, C slim, or 60s C vintage standard neck shapes.  The fingerboard options include Brazilian rosewood, Indian rosewood, or a Pau Ferro board.  Of course, you select your bridge, too, from options like Gotoh 510 or Gotoh 1055.  Almost any pickup configuration is possible with the Suhr Custom Standard. Like the Suhr Classic, the Classic T can handle anything from sleek modern sounds to those sweet vintage tones.  This relic guitar is popular with both those who love vintage instruments and players who are looking for something that’s a little different from the rest of the pack.  The Classic T certainly fits that bill.

One of the things that makes the Classic T unique is that players can easily customize this guitar.  For those who want a Classic T that looks like it was made back in the 50s or 60s, they can ask for a slab body that has no contours at all.  On the other hand, for those that want contours, the slab can be done with a harder body edge radius.  An all-contour body is also an option.  It’s all up to what the player wants.  That’s one of the greatest things about Suhr and their instruments.

The Suhr Classic T relic guitar features a swamp ash body that has a black back finish and a three-tone burst.  The neck is made from one solid piece of maple in a 60s C vintage standard shape.  It has medium frets.  The instrument uses a Tusq nut, Sperzel locking gears, and all chrome hardware.  The bridge is a three-saddle vintage bridge.

To own a Suhr Classic T, simply visit the Suhr website for ordering information.  The standard price for one of these guitars is $4,170.

Suhr has several different guitars that were created in conjunction with famous players.  One such guitar is the Suhr Reb Beach Model.  This guitar was built to Reb Beach’s exacting standards.  It is instantly recognizable by its Koa body, which is oil-finished and made from premium wood.  This is attached to a Pau Ferro neck.  These two woods come together to create an instrument that features a tight, warm tone that has a nice punch to it.  Koa, a Hawaiian wood, is both beautiful and features a unique tone.  Pau Ferro, likewise, has a very luxurious feel and can produce a number of versatile sounds.  These two woods are both finished in hand-rubbed oil, giving them a great feel.

The neck is made in the Even C RB neck shape that tapers very gently up to the neck.  This is because Reb’s playing style requires one to play horizontally across the fretboard, so this tapering helps with that.  The Even C modified shape is also very comfortable—it’s not too thin or flat, so you won’t feel much hand fatigue at all.

The Suhr Reb Beach Guitar also features EMG pickups set in a single-single-hum configuration.  It also has a Gotoh double-locking tremolo system, heavy nickel frets, gold hardware, and a 5-way switch.  To order your own Reb Beach Model Guitar, visit an authorized Suhr dealer or check out the Suhr website. In 2009, Suhr designed the Suhr Custom 2009 LE relic guitar, their first limited edition guitar (they later designed a 2010 LE).  The 2009 LE is based on the Carve Top design.  This makes the instrument feel very luxurious.  The ¾” figured Maple top gives it a high-end brilliance and a much tighter sound than one would find from a flat top.  The carve in the 2009 LE, however, is a bit more subtle than the standard Carve Top instrument, making the LE look a little different.

Those who purchased the Suhr Custom 2009 had several different options.  The LE came in either a quilted maple top or a flame maple top.  Customers also had a choice of two different bridges: a Gotoh double-locking bridge or the Gotoh 510TS-FE1 bridge.  The second option was more traditional, while the first provided a more modern look.  Finally, the 2009 LE came in three different colors: natural gloss, faded trans whale blue burst, and faded teardrop honey burst.  These options allowed players to personalize the instrument.

So how likely are you to be able to get your hands on one of these Custom 2009 LE guitars?  Not very.  Suhr was limiting the production to only 100 guitars.  If you didn’t get one when they were first released, chances are Suhr has reached the 100 mark already.  Your only hope is to find someone who wants to sell theirs, but be ready to pay for it. Suhr has created several different series of guitars, including their classic, modern, and standard series.  The antiques series is a collaborative work between Suhr and J Black, who used to work with the Fender Custom Shop.  J. Black uses his proprietary aging process to take every guitar in the antique line and give it his own unique antique look and feel.

One of the great things about the Suhr Antique Guitar line is that it is highly customizable.  While Suhr does have some recommendations as to the woods and such, you are free to select everything.  You get to pick the woods, pickups, hardware, neck shape, type of frets, fingerboard radius, and more.  Because Suhr uses only the best in creating their guitars, you never have to give up playability for style and look.  You can even include things such as the Buzz Feiten Tuning System if you like, although you can also go straight vintage, too.

With the many different options Suhr offers on the Antique line, you can truly create a guitar that is to your unique specifications.  Thanks to J. Black and his special aging process, you can own a great looking antique guitar that sounds amazing.

suhr-custom-2010-limited-editionTaking a relic guitar look and adding a bit of modern flair to it, Suhr has created the Suhr Custom 2010 Limited Edition guitar.  The design may not look quite as relic as some may like, but for those who want a bit of a modern look to their instrument, it’s perfect.  The 2010 Limited Edition is based on the Suhr Custom guitar, but it’s got a few new changes to it.  For one, the set-neck construction gives the instrument a completely new feel and sound to it, plus it looks different, too.  This look was designed by John Suhr to provide neck-body stability and maximum resonance.  The characteristics and response are both quite different from bolt-on necks.

The set-neck construction isn’t always considered better than the bolt-on neck, but it does create a different type of sound and look.  The Suhr Custom 2010 Limited Edition is the first Suhr guitar to feature a set-neck, so it will be quite a valuable collector’s piece in addition to being a great instrument that can be played for years.  Only 125 Suhr Custom 2010 Limited Edition guitars will be made, although Suhr does plan to construct more set-neck instruments in the future.  However, if you want a 2010 LE, you’d better order one soon before they’re all gone.

If you’re looking for a great classic looking guitar that sounds amazing, then you want to take a look at the Suhr Retro. suhr-retro This guitar, which comes in a classic 2-tone sunburst, is a great updated version of the relic guitars first designed and produced back in the 50s.  These guitars combine the best of the old with the best of the new.  For example, while older guitars may not have been as consistent in tone and sound, today’s modern guitars are more stable.  However, they bring in that great broken-in, used feel that older guitars have.  Some of these Suhr Retro guitars even incorporate some interesting new concepts and changes to make them amazing instruments.

The Suhr Retro features several different options for the player who wants to design his guitar from the ground up.  Suhr lets players select the neck shape, the fingerboard radius, and much more.  Their guitars also feature the SSC System.  This is one of Suhr’s unique additions that removes that 60Hz hum without touching the vintage tones.  The Retro is rounded out with V60 pickups, Medium SS frets, and a reliced finish to make it look like it’s been around for years.
