The Gibson Les Paul guitar is one of the most iconic instruments in popular music. A number of variations of the base model have been introduced over the years, including the Gibson Les Paul Custom guitar. This is one of the pricier and highest quality guitars that Gibson makes. The LesPaul was designed by guitarist LesPaul in collaboration with Gibson in 1952.
The base LesPaul guitar was a response to the Fender Telecaster, which had pioneered the single body electric guitar design that was sweeping the rock, country and blues music scenes. The LesPaul had some differences, such as the strings being attached differently than other guitars. The Les Paul also differentiated itself by coming in many boldly colored designs.
The Les Paul Custom guitar was designed from the start to be a more high quality and stately guitar. It was nicknamed the Black Beauty for its slick black design. LesPaul stated that the design was meant to be reminiscent of a tux. The guitar's surface was made from solid mahogany, instead of maple like the standard model. Starting in 1957, the Custom was outfitted with the humbucker style pickup, giving it its defining bulky and warm sound.
The Custom of today has a sharper tone due to its ebony fretboard. The frets are also somewhat lower than those on your standard guitar, which has led to some calling the Custom the fretless wonder.
Many notable popular musicians have used the Gibson Les Paul custom guitar as their instrument of choice at one point or another. Artists from Carlos Santana to Peter Frampton to Eric Clapton have used Customs.
A brand new Custom today is worth several thousand dollars. They are no longer limited to just being Black Beauties; Customs have since produced with different finished including Antique White and Silverburst.
will a blank fender replacment neck fit my squire affinity stratocaster?
i got a new two piece maple neck for my squire affinity strat. im wondering if it will fit? will it be too big? do i have to sand the back of the neck down to make it not as tall?
it should fit since squire is just a branch of fender. i don't know for sure, but it seems right for it to fit since they are basically the same.

The Secret To Maximizing Your Guitars Potential
Poorly setup guitars really make playing the guitar a bigger challenge. As if it is not an endless challenge itself. But why make it more difficult? As you probably know by know, the faster you learn to play brings you more personal gratification and desire.
What is 'guitar setup'? Basically it means to have the specifications adjusted to the actual factory standards or your personal specs. Simply put, a set-up includes:
#1. adjusting the height of the strings over the neck
#2. making sure your frets are level or the same height all the way up the neck
#3. intonation
#4. adjust and lubricated all remaining components, in general.
The purpose here is to help you to have a guitar you can play to it's max potential. Hopefully without confusing anyone or using unusual terms that don't really mean anything to you. As a matter of interest, I have rarely handled a new guitar, especially Gibson Guitars, that are really poorly set-up from the factory. Realistically speaking, it it a real mystery as to why more time is not spent setting up the guitars at the factory.
The Fender and Squier line of guitars seem to be the best set-up guitars from the factory, especially the Artist Series and Custom Shop series, and sometimes they leave a lot to be desired. I don't really want to beat down any brand of guitar, it is not personal.
That being said leads me into the fact that every guitar a guitar store unpacks should be set-up before it is shipped or sold. Due to many conditions, it is not realistic for guitar retailers of any type to set-up every guitar. With the low profit levels guitar dealers are saddled with, it is not economically possible.
Regardless of whether it is new or used, once your guitar is properly set-up and adjusted, you may not recognize it in terms of how well it plays and just as important, how excellent it now sounds. It does not matter what your feelings were in term of playability and tone, your mind will be changed and blown.
I got lucky, my teacher of many moons is not just a brilliant teacher, he is a bona-fide Guitar Hero. He has 51 years of playing, including a music education at Berklee School of Music. FYI, that is one of the top two leading music schools in the world. Period. Richard Mac plays at a level only achieved by guitarists like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Eric Johnson and other players in that class, although he clearly has his own vibe.
Back to the subject, my score from Richard, other than teaching me to be a pretty good player (always getting better) is all about guitar set-up. He is sick about having every one of his many guitars set-up before he even plays it. Since I am his disciple, I now set-up every guitar I own immediately upon arrival. Believe this, I bought an Eric Clapton Custom Shop guitar a few years ago and set it up immediately. Actually it was well set-up from the Fender Custom Shop, but It had to checked and set-up perfectly.
The point is that if you buy a Mexican Standard Stratocaster and set it up properly, you have a guitar that plays as good as an American Standard Strat at four to six hundred dollars less. Same thing with an Epiphone guitar. Why buy a poorly set-up Gibson Les Paul for a few thousand bucks when you can buy an Epiphone guitar for less than half that price and have a better playing and sounding guitar?
Lets get down to brass tacks. A good guitar set-up is less than a hundred bucks. Believe me, that is a steal. A lot of precision work along with some expensive tools go into a set-up. Not to mention the 'love' built in by the luthier or guitar maker. I spent a lot of my life rebuilding automotive transmissions, and anyone in the know, knows they are precise and delicate. Guitars take the same delicate precision and time to make right. Don't take my word for it, cough up the bucks and at least try it.
Not mentioning the many upgrades possible would be a disservice to you. If you had designs on upgrading your pickups or adding a TBX active tone control, locking tuners or whatever you can imagine, this is a great time to do it. Like I said, you can change the entire vibe of your guitar by locating a well trusted guitar maker/luthier.
For more information and ways to get a good set-up, and other cool guitar upgrades or modifications contact Guitar Players Center for a competent luthier who has the experience. Point of importance, don't just shop by price, not every guitar maker/luthier is the same. Get a reference first, it's the 'love' that counts most, not the cost.

What would be a good eq setting for a distorted tone using my fender american vintage 57 reissue stratocaster?
Ok well i just got this guitar and i have really go clean tones so i dont need those. But im having difficultly finding a good eq on my amp that brings out the great sounds of this guitar. Ive played and heard it before and it sounds awesome. But anyway i have a fender dsp212 solid state amp, i cant afford another one right now but if you have any suggestions that would be great. For reference im looking for a good gritty, bluesy rock sound. A good tone for stuff like zz top, hendrix, zepplin, eric johnson, ect...
you should buy a distortion pedal like an ibanez tube screamer,it would help a lot
on your amp try setting the treble at 10 oclock and mids and bass at 2 oclock
if you get a pedal set the tone at 10 o clock, the gain at 3 oclock
The Schecter Guitar Research repair shop was opened in 1976 by David Schecter in Van Nuys, California. This is where it all began for the future guitar manufacturing company. The repair shop manufactured replacement guitar parts and eventually supplied everything you would need to build a guitar but did not build any of their own guitars at that time. Their main customers were custom repair shops and the two big guitar-manufacturing companies, Gibson and Fender.
Finally in 1979, Schecter started making their own guitars to sell to the public. The designs were based on Fender guitar designs and were very expensive to purchase because of the high quality parts and the small amount they made available. Also around this time, Pete Townshend from The Who got a Schecter guitar from his guitar tech and immediately liked it. In fact he liked the sound so much that it ended up being his main touring guitar.
Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits was the next high profile artist to discover the Schecter guitar. He ended up with many Schecter guitars over the years and one even sold at an auction for $50,000 in 2004.
In 1983, Schecter ran out of resources and could no longer meet the demand for their guitar. Schecter ended up selling the company to a group of Texas investors who were well aware of the great reputation of the Schecter name and the top quality of their guitars. Knowing this, the new owners expected to make a profit by expanding the operation and moving the company to Dallas, Texas. This unfortunately turned out to be a bad move because most of the original employees wouldn't move to Texas and this eventually led to poor design and quality decisions by the new staff. The guitars that were being produced at this time were being mass-produced and getting a bad reputation for their poor quality.
Even though they were going through this rough time, Schecter did manage to get an amazing guitarist by the name of Yngwie Malmsteen to endorse their guitars. They also released several new models including the Telecaster style guitar that Pete Townshend was using called the Saturn. Their other popular model was the Scorcher, which was based on the Stratocaster design. Even with these new designs and making their guitars more affordable, sales were very poor due to the lack of quality.
In 1987, the company was unloaded to a Japanese entrepreneur by the name of Hisatake Shibuya. Hisatake was no stranger to music and guitars; he also owned ESP Guitars and the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. He moved Schecter back to California and soon brought the reputation of the company back to the way it used to be. The company went back to their old ways of producing high quality, high priced custom guitars. The guitars were also made in fewer numbers and made available to a smaller amount of dealers.
In 1996, Hisatake hired Michael Ciravolo as president of Schecter. Michael was an experienced musician and had been an employee at a guitar shop owned by Hisatake. Ciravolo ended up bringing in some high profile musicians to endorse Schecter guitars including Robert DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots) and Sean Yseult (White Zombie).
Michael Ciravolo also disliked the Fender style designs, so he developed new designs in the Avenger, Hellcat and Tempest models. He also wanted to produce a more affordable guitar and opened up a factory in Inchon, South Korea to build them. This time though, Michael made sure that they were high quality guitars as well as being mass-produced. The parts were made in the South Korean factory and then shipped to their U.S. shop for the guitars to be assembled. This led to the creation of the famous Diamond Series Schecter Guitars.
The Schecter Guitar Company is still going strong today and is loved by mostly the Heavy Metal, Hard Rock and Alternative styles of music. Some of the most famous guitarists past and present that have used Schecter guitars are Pete Townshend (The Who), Prince, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), Shaun Morgan (Seether), Robert DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots), Jerry Horton (Papa Roach), Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance (Avenged Sevenfold), Paul Raven (Killing Joke and Ministry) and Sean Yseult (White Zombie).

How much could I sell a 1996 Fender Stratocaster guitar 50th anniversary?
I got this guitar from my dads work so I have no idea how much money was paid for it and what it really is. But it has a sticker on the back that says 50 years blah blah blah 1946 to 1996 and I'm not even sure if that means it was from 1996 and its made in mexico. Also is there anyway for me to figure out what the guitar is by looking at the serial number?
Hi
By the serial numbers, i can tell the year and where it was made.
As for a real 50th anniversary, they sell from $1100 and up. A mexican model sells on E-bat for $450.
The 50th anniversary is a model made in 1996 and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Fender.

The Malden Utopia is a great looking and sounding relic guitar that feels just like any classic instrument. It is set up like a Stratocaster, which adds to this classic look and feel, and it’s a fairly flexible guitar that can be used to play many different types of music. The Utopia resembles the Duo Sonic guitars made during the 50s. It features three single coil strap pickups, a five way switch, and volume and tone controls. It’s also a very lightweight and well balanced guitar. While it’s based on a Fender, it has several interesting changes and features to make it a unique, fun instrument in its own right.
The Malden Utopia features an alder body that comes in basswood, white, or black. The neck is bolted on and is made out of maple rosewood. It features 21 narrow and tall frets, and the inlays are dots. All of the hardware featured on these guitars is made from chrome, and they also use 3 Alinico single coil pickups. The guitars come in three different finishes—white, black, and three tone. All three finishes look great, and overall, these relic guitars will bring back the look and feel of the 50s. Fender stratocaster third string (g) vibration at neck pick up?
I purchased a custom shop stratocaster, the problem, the third (g) string sounds terrible at the neck pick up at 4-10 on tone dial at the 12 fret, with the tone dial at 2 it sounds great with a nice steady note instead of the ping/ring vibration sound at 4-10,this happens when using just a little distortion and drive,ok in clean.no other strings or other pick up position does this, using a new mesa lonestar special, took everything to the dealer, amp is good, cable good, tried diffrent brand strings(using pure nickle)strat was pro set up by a fender warranty depot, fender dealer tried a new strat and amp, same problem, his buddies custom strat same problem, all excellent musician with knowledge, should I use fender superbullets ? why only this string only ?trying to get SRV tone,he played in the neck pick position at 10 on tone,I am using 11-50 gauge 1/2 step down. thanks
I used to set up with Fender & Gibson and the STRING has nothing to do with what is happening. Ridiculous if you ask me. The problem resides in the neck pickup and the wounding around it. The tone pots is another issue.
Stevie Ray used 500k pots which gives more tone and more output than the original Fender. Don't kid yourself, many guitarist do things that have nothing to do with factory settings. If you want the SRV sound, get a Seymour Duncan at the bridge, and it will solve your problems. The magnet on the G-string on the fender neck pickups are all the same. DEFECTIVE and UNBALANCED. and mass produced which means all the Fender in your category will have the same problem.
You have to understand that the electric guitar depends on the pickup-ups to pick up the string vibrations and you need the amp for power. You even said it, when you set to 4-10, it is krap. Change the tone pots to 500k and you are set. Nothing to LOSE and Everything to GAIN if you get the pun
This is the pickup that redefined the Texas blues sound. Texas Specials boast plenty of midrange chirp, crystal highs and tight bass, along with increased output.

Where Do You Get A Left Handed Les Paul Style Guitar Now That Gibson Has Stopped Making Left Handed Guitars?
The Les Paul model electric guitar is a legend. It is the second most popular and most recognizable shaped guitar in the world, second only to the Stratocaster shape by Fender.
The Les Paul guitar was designed by Ted McCarty, the President of Gibson Guitars in the early 1950's with contributions (depending on whose side of the story you hear) by Les Paul, a popular Jazz guitarist at that time.
The Les Paul guitar has continued to be made, pretty much unchanged from the original eversince. Now that is a winner of a design!
Les Paul guitars are also made by Gibson's "budget" brand Epiphone, which look the same but are made with cheaper materials, and mass produced in Gibson's Epiphone factory in Qingdao, China. Nothing wrong with Epiphone guitars, for the price, but they are not Gibsons, which are 100% made in USA.
In 2008, per information given to me, Gibson stopped making left handed guitars. Period. Citing "lack of demand" as the reason, it would appear, they simply canned that whole side of their operation, including Custom Shop option.
That was a good slap in the face for left handed guitarists around the world, and considering that there are still very many left handed players in the world today, admittedly nowhere near as many right handed guitarists, there is now a little bit of a "void" created for lefty guitarists who love the Les Paul style guitar.
Left handed guitarists tend to also keep the guitars they have, rather than sell them all over the place, like you see happening with right handed guitars all the time (More people give up learning than staying with it so there are always tons of guitars going cheap on ebay and elsewhere.) The point is this: the second hand market is not that lucrative for left handed guitarists and now that Gibson has stopped making left handed guitars, those with their trusty Les Pauls are probably going to keep hold of them, not sell them!
So what do you do if you want a new Les Paul style guitar these days?
Like Stratocasters and Telecasters, Les Pauls and SGs have been copied by many, many, many guitar brands. Some have become very famous for this, and some of them have become popular guitar brands in their own right for it.
Here is where you go if you want a left handed Les Paul today.
First, wave goodbye to Gibson, say "thanks for the memories. You lost me as a customer by YOUR own doing."
TOKAI. This is a Japanese brand that has been around since the 1960s. They started out making knock-offs of Fenders and Gibsons and over the years, gained such a great reputation for quality and affordability, that in the last few years, Gibson got wind (or finally took notice) of the fact that a lot of people were opting for the Tokai versions instead of their guitars. Apparently Gibson woke up to it, turned nasty and tried to take Tokai to court for "copyright infringement" and somewhere in all of that they went off and hurriedly got their headstock design re patented (patents only last 25 years) so they could have something to stick to Tokai! How's that for bad sportsmanship! Per what people have told me, Tokai's are not allowed to be sold in the USA any more (home of Gibson.)
Nevertheless, Tokai's "Love Rock" guitars are incredibly well made and incredible sounding Les Paul style guitars, easily available in Europe, Asia and New Zealand (but for some reason, not Australia! Perhaps not surprising considering how behind the times Australia is compared to Europe, Asia and New Zealand?)
I thoroughly recommend any left handed guitarist wanting a left handed Les Paul style guitar to consider Tokai as their first alternative option. And no, I am not in any way affiliated with or on the payroll of Tokai Guitars. Tokai Love Rock guitars are awesome to play and some say are better than Gibson Les Pauls originals!
GREG BENNETT. For a budget Les Paul that looks pretty damned cool, the "AVION" series guitars are a mighty fine looking Les Paul style guitar. Greg Bennet does one left handed model. Unfortunately boring old sunburst, but even in that colour, it's a damned sexy guitar, a little different from a Gibson (the cutaway is a bit more pointy) but still looking pretty Les Paul-ish! With the Avion you only need to swap out out the pickups for some Seymour Duncans, DiMarzio, or EMGs, or Wilkinsons (for the budget conscious) and maybe the replace the tuners, to get this guitar up to full pro level.
Stock standard, they are well under $500!
HAMER. Not cheap, but Hamer's "Monaco Elite" model is available in left hand and looks pretty similar to a Les Paul. Retailing for around USD 3500, it comes with Seymour Duncans stock standard. So you know that is going to be one sweet sounding guitar! Seems to be only in sunburst, it would appear.
STAGG. Are actually a European company, from Belgium. They have since branched out into other instruments other than guitars, such as pianos, drums and wind instruments. Many people think of Stagg as a knock-off company since they are like most every other European or Asian guitar brand whose products are Gibson and Fender copies. Their Les Paul model (L320LH) is damned close to being a Les Paul clone. But oh no! They are another brand that makes a dreck sunburst colour! Fortunately they also make the LH ones in black too. Uber-boring. But at least they have something for lefties! They are pretty cheap too, around USD 300.
GORDON-SMITH GUITARS. This is a UK company that is supposedly to the UK "what Gibson is to USA." They have been going since 1979 and they don't charge extra for left handed guitars. Their "Gypsy" and "Graduate" series guitars resemble Les Paul guitars very closely and are around the USD 1000 – 1500 mark. I have heard that the waiting time can be a while. Not sure if that is true or not. Best to ask!
These are just a few major guitar companies that make single cut guitars like the famous Les Paul shape.
There are many, many other guitar brands that make this style of guitar and this article is not meant to lean towards any one brand over another. Using budget as a guideline opens the door to many many other possibilities too.
There are many excellent boutique luthiers in Australia, Europe and USA as well as many mass-producing factories in China, Korea, and more recently Indonesia and India. Although generally speaking the Asian factories are not equipped to make left handed guitars, there is always the possibility that some factory somewhere might make something like a Les Paul under an Asian brand name. And with technology and know-how the way it is today, they may even make them as good as if not better than other "known" brands available in the Western world. Today is not 10 , 5 or even 2 years ago! Wake up and arrive in the present if you still think "Made in China" means something bad.
In any case, here are some tips on finding that new and now elusive Les Paul style guitar today, since Gibson no longer makes left handed guitars for us.
Why support the mouth that bites the hand that feeds?
If you want a high quality affrodable left handed guitar that is NOT a Les Paul or a Stratocaster/Telecaster then you should get a GASKELL guitar. Gaskell is the only guitar brnad in the world that is 100% dedicated to production and custom left handed guitars only.

As part of my job as a teacher, I often have to play the piano at assemblies just to settle the mood and get the children a little more focused on listening. Honestly, my main instrument is the guitar, and I am a much better guitar player than I am a piano player. Let's just say I am much more comfortable playing when I don't think anyone is listening.
On this particular day, one of the "higher ups" was coming to speak at this assembly and she was there in the auditorium waiting. The children were so preoccupied with making a good impression on her that they were listening intently to my playing in a way that they never had listened before. It was suddenly as if I was giving a concert for an entire student body and one of the Assistant Superintendents. I didn't panic or stop playing or try to make and awkward joke out of it, I just kept playing. The atmosphere in the room put me in a state that I had to succeed. I continued to play, without any mistakes or stops until the time when the principal came in and introduced the superintendent. I played 5 or 6 pieces perfectly with no escape hatch or internal excuses or chatter. I had never played the piano that well before, it was like everything came together for me that day. Heart, mind, fingers all in the zone and doing what we knew we had to do.
The point is, as performers we have to reach a level at which intense situations bring out the best in our playing. These are the times when nervousness is the only thing that will destroy our performance and if we let it in in a destructive way, it WILL destroy our performance. It's about understanding and using your environment. All of those children were enjoying the music and expecting me to play it well. In my heart I did not want to let them down, but I let myself feel it as love and I opened the door to it and let it empower my playing.
An audience can easily hate a performer. The possibility exists that they won't like you, but they came there to like you and to like your performance. They are expecting to like your performance, you just have to let them in. People don't attend a performance to be disappointed. Acknowledge them as an environmental factor. If it was windy, you would probably enjoy the breeze while you were playing. You might have to make certain provisions like clipping your music down, but it's just an environmental factor to both accommodate and enjoy. You can't protect your heart from injury and play from your heart at the same time. Can you allow yourself to be completely vulnerable to the possibility of pain in order to play beautifully from your heart?
Here's one of my favorite quotes on fear. "For it is not death and pain that is a fearful thing, but fear of death and pain". Similar to the presidential, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." Too many musicians are enslaved by their own ego. We have built up an image of ourselves and we fear being crushed by the criticism of someone we admire, or someone with more advanced skills than us. We let ourselves be intimidated by assessing our self worth with every note, as if we must prepare ourselves to be disappointed and realize we don't have any real talent after all. As if talent and greatness was just a delusion.
Buddhists speak of five fears that block our liberation.
1. Fear of loss of life.
2. Fear of loss of livelihood.
3. Fear of loss of reputation.
4. Fear of unusual states of mind.
5. Fear of speaking before an assembly.
6. Fear of ghosts. (meaning those not present but who have criticized us in the past)
With the exception of fear of loss of life, performing can be seen to encompass all of these fears. Loss of livelihood; many musicians make a part or all of their livelihood playing music. Loss of reputation; to lose one's reputation because of a bad performance could lead a musician to disaster. Unusual states of mind; nervousness can definitely create a confused and disconnected state of mind that can ruin a musicians performance. Speaking before an assembly; this is the same as performing really. Standing in front of many people giving a presentation. Fear of ghosts; the ghosts of our past. Those who said we can't do it, those who wanted us to fail, those overly critical words echoing in our heads.
Where does fear come from though? It comes from the mind, but not from our most intelligent mind. It doesn't come from the mind that went to Berklee of Juilliard. It doesn't come from the mind that passed all those jury exams or the mind that wrote 2 masters theses. It comes from our ego. The little mind. The fragile little self worth booster or killer depending on the situation. Comparison and competition take over and we lose sight of our hearts.
Ego based living is a state the Hindus call maya or delusion. "The clouds of emotion obscure the clear sight of the soul. We worry about or level or our rank within a musical social structure and develop a sense of paranoia. Great today, horrible tomorrow, who knows what will happen. As a result some performers choose constant condemnation, nothing is ever good enough and they are afraid to leave the practice room. Others think they are so great that they never accept any criticism as valid and they live in bubble of narcissism.
Let's just play from the heart.

What is a better heavy metal pickup for a Fender Stratocaster - Jb Jr. or Hot Rails?
Not sure which one to buy to get the best lead and crunch tone.
Tone is about wood, though i'd go for the Hot Rails.
It should be noted that for a small cost of US $50 you can have Bill Lawrence pick ups. They're pretty hot.

Icon. Not a word to be used lightly. But the Stratocaster® is just that. The new American Standard left-handed Stratocaster® guitars are beauties to behold in sound, look and feel. We kept the hand-rolled fingerboard edges, Alnico V pickups and staggered tuning machines for playability, tone and stability, and added several new features, including: A new bridge with improved bent-steel saddles and a copper-infused high-mass block for increased resonance and sustain. A new neck treatment tinted for a richer presentation, with the maple or rosewood fingerboard buffed to a high gloss. The back of the neck still has that silky satin finish. A thinner finish undercoat that lets the body breathe and improves resonance. Also includes a new Fender® exclusive SKB® molded case.ElectronicsBridge Pickup : American Strat® Single-Coil PickupMiddle Pickup : American Strat® Single-Coil PickupNeck Pickup : American Strat® Single-Coil PickupHardwareBridge : 2-Point Synchronized Tremolo with Vintage Style Bent Steel SaddlesHardware : ChromeStrap Buttons : American Series Strap ButtonsString Nut : Synthetic Bone NutTuning Machines : Deluxe Staggered Cast/Sealed Tuning MachinesNeckFretboard Radius : 9.5" Radius (241 mm)Fretboard : Rosewood or MapleFret Size : Medium JumboNeck Material : Maple NeckNeck Plate : 4-Bolt Neck Plate with Micro-TiltNeck Shape : Modern "C" ShapeNumber of Frets : 22Nut Width : 1.685" (42.8 mm)Position Inlays : Black Dot Position InlaysScale Length : 25.5" (648mm)

im looking into buying a strat to play mostly blues on. iv been comparing and looking up strats and iv found a couple that catch my eye. im really looking for something to get a nice fat bluesy tone out of. my price limit is probably $800-$1000
and which do you like better, the sienna sunburst with maple or rosewood fretboard?
any other opinions on other strats would be great
Nice guitar! I would definitely go with the rosewood neck. Consider getting a different pickup for the bridge position like a Texas special. It is a very good pickup for blues applications. I would leave the other pickups totally stock.
Every year, thousands of people head to guitar shows to admire and play vintage Gibsons, Fenders, Martins and more. Some of these guitars can sell for up to a quarter of a million dollars. They're not all that expensive, putting many in the reach of less wealthy collectors, but all of them have a few things in common. Vintage guitars are beautiful, high quality, and they appreciate in value over time.
The vintage guitar market has been going up as older Americans buy the same models of guitars as their heroes once played, and younger collectors look for the best in older instruments. Guitar collecting can out perform ordinary investments - it's much more stable, and a lot more fun than playing the stock market. A 1950s Les Paul purchased just a few years ago may now be worth five times that price.
Only a few thousand of those guitars were ever produced. That means they're among the most popular out there. Some collectors are paying record prices for them, and they don't even play. These beautiful, rare guitars are so compelling that even non-musicians are interested in owning one. A 1961 Les Paul Custom might sell for more than a hundred thousand dollars. When the first Les Paul was produced in the early 1950s, the sale price was $210.
In the past five years, the vintage guitar market has nearly doubled. The average price is about thirteen thousand dollars, according to the Vintage Guitar Price guide, which tracks the price of forty two different models produced by Gibson, Fender and Martin. Acoustic guitars have increased in price steadily, but the most collectible are electrics, propelled by the mystique of rock 'n' roll.
Solid body electric guitars from what some call the golden age - the 1950s and 1960s - have been increasing in price significantly. There's a little bit of everyone's rock heroes in these guitars, even the ones that are just the same type as those used by celebrities. Actual celebrity guitars are worth even more. Eric Clapton's famous customized Stratocaster, Blackie, sold for nearly a million in 2004.
Fame isn't all there is to it, though. Older instruments have a richer, better tone, and are made from higher quality materials. Collectors love the sound of a great Martin acoustic, or a golden age Telecaster. An older guitar produces a much better sound than a brand new one that sells for a tenth of the price. A well treated old guitar resonates better and has better action when played.
While a solid body guitar won't reverberate in the same way as an acoustic, there's still a big difference between a vintage Les Paul and a brand new one. It's the difference between a growl and a purr. If you love to play, a real, high quality guitar from the 1950s and 1960s will be a delight, as well as a great investment.
If you are interest in getting started collecting vintage guitars for fun and profit or even if you have been doing so for years, Bob's Vintage Guitars is a website that you should visit. It has a lot of useful information about vintage guitars and also a great selection of vintage guitars for sale.
